Burn Ban Remains in Effect
The Guemes Island Fire Commissioners have approved a Modified Burn Ban for all of Guemes Island, as of Monday, Jun 14, 2021. Western Washington saw 220 wildfires in the month of April, a 315% increase over the 10-year average for that month. The Washington State DNR has predicted that the 2021 fire season will be a challenging one, and the commissioners have determined a burn ban is the best form of fire prevention since over 50% of wildfires in Washington are caused by debris burns.
The Guemes Island Fire Department has made the decision that Marine Rescue is no longer a viable service that can be provided by this department. After seven years with our Marine Rescue vessel, the data shows that we are unable to respond in a manner that allows for both the safety of our volunteers, and offers a timely response to marine events.
COVID-19 cases continue to be present in Skagit County and throughout the state. Please take every measure to help stop the spread and follow the guidance and precautions available at the Washington State Department of Health's COVID-19 briefing page.
Starting April 16, all Washington residents, age 16 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. For additional information, please see the county health site here or the DOH vaccine information page here.
Commissioners' Meetings occur the second Monday of every month at 7pm and are currently being conducted virtually. Contact Eric Kankaala if you would like to attend.
